"I do get emotional. If you don’t allow yourself to feel what your patients are going through, then you do a disservice to them."

Kathryn received her nurses' training at the University of North Dakota. She moved to Arizona in 2004 to work at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, and has been with Southwest Hematology Oncology since 2006.

She's currently a member of the Phoenix Oncology Nursing Society, the Oncology Nurses Society, and the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.

"I realized in 1993 that oncology is where my passion is," Kathryn says. "People let us into their lives at a very challenging time and I take that responsibility very seriously."

Kathryn believes that you have to have good communication to give the best care. "A big part of my job is being able to explain things so that patients and their families understand their treatments and how to manage their symptoms and side effects," she says. "It’s also important for me to help patients know that they can’t live for the cancer. They can’t let the diagnosis rule their life."
